AI Games: Using Video Games to Train AI

As the JalwaGame app, designers, and scientists turn to artificial intelligence to create enticing virtual worlds and new jobs in gaming, they’re also moving the needle forward in important ways toward real-world efficiencies across multiple industries. But the most impactful application of AI in gaming isn’t in enabling immersive experiences, it’s in helping to teach the AI to learn and problem solve.

One of the most popular examples of this is a program developed by Google called Draw with AI, where the AI player is asked to draw something in twenty seconds. The program makes constant guesses and, if it draws the right thing within that time, it wins. It’s a fun experiment and demonstrates how AI learns and solves problems by slowly learning, through repetition and feedback, to avoid bad actions.

Another way that AI is used in video games is through generative AI, which creates dynamic scenarios for the player to play through. This helps to keep the game engaging and exciting, as well as provide a challenge that is both unique and difficult to overcome.

Other types of generative AI in video games include smart NPCs, which use contemporary AI technologies (including large language models and reinforcement learning) to make non-player characters more believable and interactable. Finally, game balancing AI uses gameplay data to ensure that the difficulty of a video game is maintained, so that players of all skill levels can find their way into the action.
